ALAN SILLITOE – THE LONELINESS OF THE LONG-DISTANCE RUNNER

First edition, W. H. Allen, 1959.

The second book written by Alan Sillitoe, while in hospital for a year after RAF service in Malaya. The title story follows the lead-up to a running race for which the lead character, a borstal boy, is training. An exciting read, fuelled with wit, rebellion and aggression, aimed directly at authority and privilege. Following this is a selection of other short stories that also follow a sociological theme.
