First English translation, published by Victor Gollancz, 1963.

One of the most groundbreaking novels to come out of the Soviet Union, launching it’s creator, Alexander Solzhenitsyn- a mathematics teacher in a Ryazan high school, to international fame. First published in Novy Mir literary magazine, this novel was the first account of Stalinist oppression to be published in the Soviet Union. Solzhenitsyn presents a harrowing story of survival in a gulag labour camp through the daily struggles of Ivan Denisovich, an innocent citizen accused of spying, forced to ten years of labour.
