Semi autobiographical this is a novel of addiction that chronicles a 5 day alcoholic binge in New York. Later adapted into the classic Billy Wilder/Ray Milland, Oscar and Cannes winning film.

Charles Jackson  captured the madness, compulsion, fear, degradation of addiction but also hints at a latent homosexuality in the protagonist Don Birman. Yes, this book is the ultimate about alcoholism, the only other that really rivals it is 'A Fan's Notes' by Fred Exley, another great masterpiece about drinking.
