And The Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks is a novel by William S. Burroughs and Jack Kerouac. The first and only collaboration between Burroughs and Kerouac; written long before either writer achieved literary success, however, glimmers of future greatness are present in this book. Seminal to the 'Beat Generation, this novel effectively captures the spirit of Manhattan during the 1940's, detailing a murder from the perspectives of two close friends which was based upon a real murder committed by a friend of both writers.
