TRISTAN DE VERE COLE - SON OF AUGUSTUS JOHN

We are enormously privileged to have Tristan de Vere Cole come and talk about  his eccentric past and not to mention his father Augustus John whose standing as a painter is equalled perhaps only to his reputation as a lover.

Born in 1935, he is generally acknowledged to be the last illegitimate child of Augustus John (1878-1961). De Vere Coles's book combines memoir and extracts from diaries and letters, particularly the numerous letters from Augustus to Tristan and his mother,
The book offers a  fascinating insight into the social mores of the period 1926-1961. He describes growing up as one of the artist's family and travelling with them, before the war, to Jamaica and France; his schooldays; his time at Dartmouth Naval College and service in the Royal Navy; and his mother's trial for the attempted murder of her lover Lord Vivian.
