The Fashion Designer, The Spyhunter & the Man From Moscow
Soho-fixated writer Paul Willetts – whose recent biography of the strip-show king Paul Raymond was turned into a movie starring Steve Coogan – will be talking about his new book. Set in London between the summers of 1939 and 1940, it’s a non-fiction thriller about a little-known yet significant espionage case that had the potential to transform the outcome of World War II
At its heart of the story are three uniquely strange characters. There’s Anna Wolkoff, the once famous émigré fashion designer-turned Nazi spy. And there’s Maxwell Knight, an MI5 spyhunter so eccentric that he used to take his pet bear-cub for walks round the streets of Chelsea. Completing this bizarre trio is Tyler Kent, a handsome young American womaniser who worked at the US Embassy and became entangled in romantic relationships with both Anna Wolkoff and Helen Mirren’s glamorous auntie.
