SOHO: STRONG WOMEN, SOFT POWER: READINGS FROM CONTEMPORARY JAPANESE LITERATURE

The Society Club presents short readings in translation of three remarkable women writers from Japan, followed by a brief Q&A. Allison Markin Powell will read from Hiromi Kawakami's Strange Weather in Tokyo, shortlisted for the Man Asian Literary Prize and the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize in 2014. Lucy North will read from the Taeko Kono's classic short story collection, Toddler-Hunting, soon to be reissued in a special twentieth-anniversary edition. Ginny Tapley Takemori will read from the best-selling novel Puppet Master by Miyuki Miyabe. Hosted by Yuka Igarashi, web editor in chief at Catapult and founder of Fifty Storms, and Allison Markin Powell, cochair of PEN America's Translation Committee.
