‘Heartbreak’ as theme worked: it is evergreen. We had Byron’s ‘When We Two Parted’, Neruda’s ‘Song of Despair’ from John, a bravura reading of Dorothy Parker by Kelly and an evocation of love for an older woman by Baudelairean Philip, translation from French on the house. Original work came from Tom, his partner Tanya and his musical collaborator Martin. Charley went drolly off-piste with John Cooper Clarke; Uberto brought us back with a waltz by Chopin on flute. The evening ended with Paola’s original ‘Love is a Hungry Beast’ and a Byronic farewell from Seki written during a twenty minute ride on the Tube. Sometimes the sudden turns out to be best. So for a new week’s theme why not try INSPIRATION.
