Poetry Nights are a tradition on Friday, with themes posted a few days before on our website, along with a brief account of the pleasures of the previous week. On the theme of ‘cool’ Seki began with a passage of prose about smoking and ended with a poem composed on the spot. We had a reading from Kerouac, and Philip was going to riposte with Burroughs but gave a contemporary cop’s description of a cold corpse instead. Uncool crime was Ron’s subject in his original ‘Theft’; Barney wove political crime with sexual abuse in a brave work-in-progress. Paola gave a succinct exposition of cool youth by Gwendolyn Brooks, counterpointed by a recording of Brooks doing it herself. An original song, ‘Lady Show Me’, was performed by Dean; and after last orders January mused that the new week’s theme ought to be that universal, very poetic experience HEARTBREAK. Let’s go for it.
