We tried The Ordinary as theme last week on Uberto’s request, but nothing was ordinary about his performance of a German poem in Italian, despite its refrain ‘Nothing happens’. Nothing was either about Angus’s ‘Incantare, incantare, incantare’ – he had misread the theme as Enchantment. Fine with us. Lail’s new song about lives travelling on parallel lines fit nicely into an evening bookended by recitation of two songs by the elusive winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. Joel offered an original piece, as did Darren, but Louisa could not be enticed from behind the bar to read an excellent one of her own. Maybe next time? The other ingénue of the evening was Erik’s baby daughter Luna, whom Oliver lullaby-ed with a lyric invoking the moon. At the end came a request that we return to the extraordinary, so why not make the new week’s theme PARADISE? If you can’t reach that, do what thou wilt.
