George Gordon, Lord Byron, was the greatest of all the Romantic poets - and the wickedest. Over the course of a tempestuous life, he treated the women around him abominably, driving several to the brink of madness or death. Yet today we think of him as a champion of liberty and freedom. The adjective 'Byronic' is seen as a badge of honour. Who was the real Byron, and has posterity presented us with the most comprehensive PR job of all time on his reputation?
Author and biographer Alexander Larman will be in conversation with writer and art dealer Detmar Blow to discuss Byron's life, loves and libertinism. Larman is the author of the acclaimed biography of Lord Rochester, BLAZING STAR (2014), as well as his recent deconstruction of Byron's personal relationships, BYRON'S WOMEN (2016). In addition to being a long-standing Byron devotee, Blow is an acclaimed man of style and letters in his own right, who brings enormous familiarity with an aristocratic milieu that has changed surprisingly little in the past two hundred years. The evening promises to be an enlightening and surprising one.
