DANIEL RACHEL, AUTHOR OF "ISLE OF NOISES"

Daniel Rachel, author of ISLE OF NOISES:  CONVERSATIONS WITH GREAT BRITISH SONGWRITERS, tells us a few of his favourite things.

A fictional character you'd like to have dinner with.
DR: Walt Jabsco: he can be found on all 2 Tone single sleeves dressed in black and white: loafers, white socks, sta-pres...  I'd invite him and the Beat girl  (from the Go Feet records) on a blind date and discuss dancing, British ska, and the finest moments of the Specials.

The cocktail that best personifies you.
DR: Aspiring to be Tom Cruise

The artist who arouses, inspires, and tingles you.
DR: George Orwell. Keep the Aspidistra Flying is a book of all time; for it's compassion and social conscience

The book that has most influenced you.
DR: The Beatles Complete Guitar/Vocal edition: When I wanted to be John Lennon as a teenager I couldn't actually sing in tune. I painstakingly went through this book picking out vocal melodies on my guitar and singing them back until I could hold a melody. 'Norwegian Wood' was my starting point.

The book on your bedside table right now?
DR: The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists Robert Tressell
