This great poet of sin and retribution was one of the first French writers to speak out of suffering rather than from a romantic attitude towards it. Associated with the decadent and erotic, the poems of Baudelaire have never failed to shock, and Les Fleurs du Mal, originally published in 1857 caused both the publisher and Baudelaire to be prosecuted, with six of the poems being banned from publication. The book was also critical of Haussmann’s renovation of Paris, which almost entirely removed much of the architecture and culture that previously flourished in the city Baudelaire knew well.
