JULIE GOLDSMITH - SOHO FAERY

Member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors Julie Goldsmith presents Soho Faery, a specially commissioned exhibition at both The Society Club and its neighboring premises The Door.

Goldsmith’s work takes two predominate forms: sculpture and ceramics. The carved figures are totem-like rather than representational; fetishes to bring home a sense of the sacred. Her painterly ceramics play with fables and domesticity. Bowls and plates that have been said to dispel household trauma - ritual objects for dark times.

From December 7th till January 7th. To RSVP for private view please email: babette@thesocietyclub.com

MATTHEW CLIFTON – TERRA HORSE

MATTHEW CLIFTON – TERRA HORSE

Terra Horse is the first solo show of Matthew Clifton, an emerging artist working in a mixture of man-made and natural materials. Plywood, plastic, shop signs, and emulsion paint come together in art-objects that would seem to appear equally at home in the dwelling of a stone-age family or the lobby of a Canary Wharf bank. With a postmodern twist of tradition, Clifton’s work nods to both the Neolithic and Neoclassical, much like you’d imagine the gift shop of a World Heritage Site.

In the heart of a Soho venue that never closes, and never opens, Terra Horse will arrive at The Door in late October. On display 24-hours a day, this corridor venue provides the ideal introduction to Clifton’s playful explorations of the unlikely clashes of disparate symbols.

JOHN HENRY NEWTON AND ALEX WEALANDS – THERE ARE STRANGERS WAITING FOR YOU

A small screen flickers in the frame, relaying grainy images out onto the street - images fed from a camera installed within the member’s only space of the Society Club. In its entirety, the footage can be considered as a film that will only ever be shown once, its action subtly directed by the movements of unknown bodies.
